Literature Text

You awake with a grunt, your entire body aching, your head spinning. Fabric brushes against your irritated skin. You’re lying on your back against something soft. A bed?

“I guess you are alive…” The voice next to you sends images and memories sparking through your mind. You turn you head and crack your eyes open.

You come face to face with light blue eyes radiating concern.

You blink several times, your eyes adjusting to the light. The figure next to you is a boy with blonde hair. A look of worry is plastered on his face as he continues to stare at you.

You attempt to sit up, dozens of questions preparing to spill from your mouth, but the sharp pain around your waist makes you regret the idea, and you release a groan of pain instead.
The boy stutters as he speaks. “Ah, it’s not a good idea to move around yet! You were wounded pretty badly.” You take the blonde’s advice and lie back down.

“Where am I? What happened to me?” you manage to croak out. Your head begins to pound with each syllable.

“Uh-we’re in a hospital due to your injury. You were bitten around the waist by a titan, but I was able to get you out before it became fatal. The doctor didn’t say how long it’ll take to heal.”

Your mind is now spinning with twice as many questions as before. You turn your head as far as you’re able to look at your surroundings. It’s a normal hospital room; with a bed, a desk, and some chairs. You and the boy are the only ones present. You crane your neck to look out the window, but can’t achieve it from your position.

Right on top of your panicked state, the boy puts his hand on your shoulder and speaks in a calming voice. “It’s okay, you’re not in any danger.” The act seems to settle you down. Your breathing slows. “Does your head hurt at all?” the blonde asks. You nod slightly, since the throbbing is still present.

The boy shifts in his seat. “I’m going to ask some questions and I want you to answer them the best you can, alright?” You nod slowly in response.

The boy asks you simple questions, starting with your name, then moving on to other simple things such as the date and where you live. You find yourself struggling with each one, only being able to remember your first name.

A little more than concerned, the boy asks another question. “Can you tell me what you remember before you woke up?”

Your breath catches in your throat as the images of blood, death, and horrid monsters flood your mind. You begin to hyperventilate, and the boy puts a hand on your back, trying to calm you down. You look over at him and stop. A new memory comes into play.

“I remember you flying,” you state. The blonde pulls his hand back, clearly confused. “Did you save me from those monsters?”

After a moment of absorbing what you’re talking about, the boy gives a weak laugh. “I-I wasn’t ‘flying’…and I didn’t kill that titan either-”

“But you saved me,” you cut him off. “What’s your name?”

“Ah…” Returning to his senses, the blonde nearly leaps to his feet in a salute. “Armin Alert of the Scouting Legion: 104th Squad!”

“Thank you, Armin. I would have died if not for you.” Slightly flustered at the admiration, Armin sits back down and clears his throat before speaking again.

“I can’t tell you much about your injury, but it looks like you have amnesia,” Armin sighs. “Your brain might still be in shock from the attack. I’m sorry.” You nod calmly at the information, your mind forming more questions to ask.

“You said you’re from the Scouting Legion. What’s that?” is the first question to pop up.

Armin seems to perk up at the chance to express his knowledge. He explains as briefly as possible about the titans and the goal of the Scouting Legion.

So those are the people who were fighting… You put two and two together. Remembering those blades shining through the air brought back yet another memory.

“Armin!” you exclaim, cutting him off yet again. He jumps slightly at your sudden energy. “What does it take to join the Scouting Legion?!”

Armin’s eyes bug out. “Are you crazy?! You were nearly eaten - you’re in the hospital for crying out loud - and you want to join the Scouts?! It’s way too dangerous!”

You shake your head. “I remember…I killed one too.” Armin’s face pales. “I don’t know how I did it, but when I did…it just felt right.” Adrenaline surges through you as you remember bringing down the blade. “If the Scouting Legion kills titans for humanity, then I want to be a part of it.”

Armin is at a loss for words. “You…you can’t be serious…” The fire in your eyes says otherwise. With a sigh, Armin gives up trying to persuade you out of it. “I guess I don’t have a say in whether you can or can’t join…but who knows how long it will be until you’re healed!” Armin stands up from his chair. “Right now, your only focus should be to get well.”

You nod your head with a smile, feeling much better. “Alright. I’ll work on it.” You lie back down on your bed, bearing the pain in your waist, and stare at the ceiling in thought. “But I’ll be seeing you when I make it to the Scouts.”

Armin finds himself sighing again as he leaves the room.
Armin's entry is finished! One more to go to end the prologue!

I don't own any of the characters used in this story :)
